Behind the Scenes of Kath's Fan Fics

The Brains (or random facts nobody wanted to know) behind the chapters...

Chapter One

I took the liberty of writing in some details about the Connor’s garage and some items that might or might not have been there. For example the nine millimeter, I can only presume that Cameron keeps a weapon with her at all times (even though she could just kill someone simply by snapping their necks like a twig but that’s beside the point lol) and seeing in season one she favored said fire arm I went with that.

Chapter Two

One reference that some of you have picked up on was my Linkin Park ringtone for John this chapter. I love Linkin Park but they can be slightly emo when they want to be so I thought that would work quite well for emo-soon-to-be-not-emo-savior-of-mankind John Connor. The song I had in mind when I wrote this was from Linkin Park’s newest CD, Minutes to Midnight, I think its called Valentine’s Day or something along those lines. Check out the lyrics and you’ll know why I picked it.

My insides all turned to ash, so slow
And blew away as I collapsed, so cold
A black wind took them away, from sight
And held the darkness over day, that night

And the clouds above move closer
Looking so dissatisfied
But the heartless wind kept blowing, blowing
I used to be my own protection, but not now
Cause my path had lost direction, somehow
A black wind took you away, from sight
And held the darkness over day, that night

And the clouds above move closer
Looking so dissatisfied
And the ground below grew colder
As they put you down inside
But the heartless wind kept blowing, blowing

So now you're gone, and I was wrong
I never knew what it was like, to be alone

On a Valentine's Day, on a Valentine's Day
On a Valentine's Day, on a Valentine's Day
(I used to be my own protection, but not now)
On a Valentine's Day, on a Valentine's Day
(Cause my mind has lost direction, somehow)
On a Valentine's Day, on a Valentine's Day
(I used to be my own protection, but not now)
On a Valentine's Day, on a Valentine's Day
(Cause my mind has lost direction, somehow)

Chapter Three

Lots of references in this one...the poem I put in Cameron’s mouth was written by Oscar Wilde, its entitled Requiescat (which I thought was cool because of Jesse’s reference to the author’s final words in Alpine Fields while lying on her death bed)

Carrots and apples, no surprise, total Riley reference from Automatic for the People and no one can forget the infamous line in Earthlings Welcome Here in mention to the smoothie flavors.

My favorite of them all goes back all the way to Season One... in my alternate happening it’s Cameron this time who tells John if he can’t cry, he can always write Riley a letter. By saying this she’s reminding him that she’s always listening even to stuff he explained to her months ago. I’m guessing most of you already picked up on that one. One of my favorite scenes in whole series is Cameron sitting at the table in Connor’s old house pre-Sarkission writing a note to the dead girl from her school. It gets me right in the gut every single time.

Chapter Four

Unlike most of my chapter titles for my Fan fiction, chapter 4's title was very vital to the over all understanding of story content. Some of you have written me and said-

"Hey what's with Derek, killing Cam wouldn't make him a hero!!"

well...to answer your statement, You're right, killing Cameron wouldn't make him a hero at all...that's where the chapters title comes in...Illusions of Grandeur symbolizes all that's screwed with Derek's thinking. He's a hero only in his own head. It's a bitter sense of irony because Derek has constantly been on John's case for not looking at the big picture and now Derek has fallen prey to that exact stumbling block. All he cares about is revenge...he's hasn't busted up on Metal in a long time and Cameron killing Riley was the perfect excuse for him to seek out his own twisted form of justice.

With Jesse's and Sarah's hatred fueling him, Derek is ready to make short work of the Caminator...but not to worry, Cameron isn't stupid and neither is John (contrary to popular opinion including my own lol). They have a plan...what is it you ask, well your just gonna have to keep reading to find out!

A side note

Addressing the issue of Derek Reese and his character: I’ve read a lot a posts in recent weeks (see thread: Fan Fiction Pet Peeves) about how very few people enjoy the way Derek is portrayed in Fan Fiction, like he’s some one-dimensional psychopath/drunk with nothing better to do then glower and plot Cameron’s demise. I’ll admit, I’ve fallen into this trap on several occasions (mostly in first drafts that you guys never get to read) but I also want to tell you I’ve given the character of Derek Reese a lot of thought. I wanted to get inside his head, understand why he does what he does. Ultimately Derek is a soldier, I’ve tried to walk the fine line between war-hardened veteran and loving uncle (you’ll see what I’m talking about in the next chapter) He’s now in the past to help John (along with Sarah and Cam) to teach John how to be a leader and a soldier. We saw some of that in Good-bye to all that and we’re gonna see more as time goes on. Keep reading and thanks so much for your feedback!

PS. Title of next chapter: What John's Uncle truly wanted...
